1 in the meantime in the period of time between now and a future event, or between two events in the past: The doctor will be here soon. In the meantime, try and relax. | I didn't see her for another five years, and in the meantime she had got married and had a couple of kids.
2 for the meantime for the present time, until something happens: The power supply should be back soon - for the meantime we'll have to use candles.
3 (sentence adverb) spoken in the present period, before something else happens: Dinner will be at 7. Meantime, just make yourselves at home.
meanwhile /'mi:nwaIl/ adverb (sentence adverb)
1 in the period of time between two events: The flight will be announced soon. Meanwhile, please remain seated. | in the meanwhile: I knew I wouldn't get my exam results for several weeks, and I wasn't sure what to do in the meanwhile.
2 while something else is happening: Jim went to answer the phone. Meanwhile Pete started to prepare lunch.
3 used to compare two things that are happening at the same time: The incomes of male professionals went up by almost 80%. Meanwhile, part-time women workers saw their earnings fall.
